A FEW QUESTIONS WITH: Nell Bryden |
New York song-writer Nell Bryden and her accomplished band really saw the start of the TGTG stage coming to life, the start of her set markedly less busy than the end, showcasing her wonderful voice and style (and she were bloomin' lovely as well). She's going to be massive, so if you're unfamiliar with Nell, remember where you heard her first!
TGTG: iPod-wise, what's going on with you?
Nell: OK well there's a lot of the old stuff that I'm loving, Otis Redding is always a favourite... but for new stuff I'm listening to a lot of Mumford and Sons, and Imelda May who played GuilFest in 2009, she's a lot of fun; and there's Paperboy Reed who I think is fantastic... You know, I'm really just interested in people who are taking some of the old influences and kicking the energy up a notch.
TGTG: What about blues, is the whole new blues thing interesting you?
Nell: I'm not so familiar with the new stuff, I love all the old Robert Johnson type stuff, but guys like The Black Keys are fantastic and even Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who are rocking out but it keeps some of the blues (spirit) - and anything by Jack White, I love it all, I just think he's so talented!
(TGTG & Nell then have a bit of slightly tipsy banter about music, including some of the Brooklyn bands who are putting their own spin on Americana, then...)
TGTG: If you could who, dead or alive, would you want to party with?
Nell: Well of course there's Janis Joplin...
TGTG (by now feeling brave): See, I think it'd have to be Jimi Hendrix, which is a fairly boring answer...
Nell: Fairly boring, but true! I mean, we're big fans over here (Nell nods to her band), but obviously such a tragic end... Alive, I don't wanna say Amy Winehouse cuz I think I'd end up in jail!... (TGTG and Nell laugh and debate whether we can repeat that).
TGTG: Finally, what is your ideal 24 hour party programme? What would you do were money no object?
Nell: OK I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to be a bit of a geek but 24 hours would have to involve something in a studio, because I love music so much that 24 hours would have to involve a studio somewhere.
TGTG: Recording?
Nell: Recording yeah, so the 24 hours would have to include a fabulous live show, then laying down some tracks in the studio followed by a night in the town, probably either London or New York - just so long as we can stay out all night!

A FEW QUESTIONS WITH: Susie Clarke |
Ahhh Susie Clarke. Beautiful voice, beautiful lady. A local lass, we thought it important to represent the Guildford massive on our stage. So here's a few questions with Susie...
TGTG: So how about GuilFest - you having fun?
Susie: I am yeah, and it's 5 minutes from my house and I'm playing the acoustic stage on Saturday!
TGTG: On your iPod, what's been getting the most rotation?
Susie: So much, but Otis Redding and Ray la Montagne are always near the top!
TGTG: Earlier this year you were touring in elevators... what are the plans for the months ahead?
Susie: Yeah last year did the Obscure Tour, playing in lifts, kebab houses and museums which was a lot of fun... that was me solo, but now there's a band we can't all play in a lift! But this year we intend to start recording in September or October, with an album released in time for Christmas (maybe)...
TGTG: Are there any potential Christmas Number Ones on the album?
Susie: Nothing particularly Christmassy, but hopefully something hit-worthy!
TGTG: So if you had 24 hours to have a money-no-object good time, how would your time be spent?
Susie: I'd party in my hometown, as I regularly do, as there's an amazing live music scene round here and there are some good bands to be seen and heard - just having a good time with friends and having a drink!

AND ONE VERY QUICK QUESTION WITH ALISON WHEELER (THE SOUTH): |
TGTG: If you had the choice, who would you love to party with, dead or alive?
The South: Ahhhhhh it's tricky (pause/silence)... Robert Pattinson!
TGTG: Robert Pattinson?! As in 'Twilight'?!
The South: Yeah yeah yeah I know!
(Mumblings; TGTG curses not getting the dictaphone close enough)
