Week Starting 15 March 2010

Variety is the Spice of Life...

Another seven days, another hearty list of all that the week has to offer in the towns and villages of Surrey. The Good Time Guide has its finger on the pulse! So if you've got a few shillings to spare, don't just sit down and twiddle your thumbs; if you attend even one of the recommendations we've got here, we've done our job! So this week we have piano bars, museums, live music and restaurants for you to consider.

Before we forget, in the coming days we'll give you a comprehensive list of where to flash your Good Time Guide Offer Card, the best free money-saving tool out there! Keep your eyes peeled folks, it's for everybody's benefit!

Monday - Al Vicolo, Guildford
If you fancy that genuine Italian experience, without the glitz and sterilised feel of a chain restaurant, Guildford's Al Vicolo should be top of your agenda. The intimate environment is perfect for a romantic meal out, and the food is nothing but the heartiest Italian with the finest fresh ingredients!

Tucked away down Swan Lane, just off the High Street, don't be put off by Al Vicolo's location; click here for directions. And once you're there, feel a genuine air of Italiana as you're warmly welcomed. Call 01483 506306 to book your table at Al Vicolo now!

Tuesday - Harold Falkner Exhibition at Museum of Farnham
One of the leading exponents of the vernacular and the arts & crafts in architecture, Harold Falkner was one of the most important figures in Surrey history that you may have never heard of. Don't be ashamed; we hadn't either! But if local art and architecture is something that interests you, head down to The Museum of Farnham on Tuesday (or any day before the 17th April!) to see an exhibition of Falkner's best work.

Known as something of an obstinate character who refused to adapt or change, Falkner's potential fame has been somewhat quelled; take the time to see a piece of local history and keep his legacy alive! Admission is free. Call Museum of Farnham on 01252 715094 to find out more, or email farnham.museum@waverley.gov.uk.

Wednesday - Charity Night at The Rose Valley, Guildford
Three course dinner with wine, live entertainment and a raffle, all in the aid of charity. Guildford's Rose Valley is well-known as one of the finest exponents of Indo-Bangladeshi cuisine, but this Wednesday sees proceeds going to Help a London Child, so you'll be eating food, being entertained and helping a good cause all at the same time!

Interested? Click here for more info. Tickets for this wonderful event are just £22.50 and that's for three courses and wine. Call 01483 572572 to book your ticket, or email ania2783@gmail.com.

Thursday - Tickled Ivory, Guildford
One of those places that just needs to be shouted about as much as possible! Tickled Ivory re-opened its doors in August 2008 after seven years of popular trading in Reigate, and now it belongs to Guildford! Specialising in live Rock n Roll, Ragtime, Boogie Blues and a little Soul and Funk, and with a huge array tasty beverages and food, visit on Thursday and you'll be celebrating the weekend early!

Click here to see upcoming events at Tickled Ivory; this Thursday is yet to be announced, but you'll be guaranteed some great live piano regardless! So kick back and this evening (Friday Part I as we like to call it) with some good time music at Tickled Ivory!

Friday - Live Sessions at The Bed Bar, Woking
Very quickly becoming the place to go of a weekend, The Bed Bar will ensure a great night out in Woking. We particularly recommend Friday nights, however, as there are live local acts from 8pm playing a mixture of original songs and classic hits from the past 30 years! Moreover, admission is free before 10.30pm!

What else? Well, their legendary cocktails are half price before 10pm so you can save a bit of money whiling the night away to the dulcet tones of whoever is playing on a Friday! Bed Bar is open until 3am on a Friday; click here to see what else is on!

Saturday - Bird World, Farnham
A fantastic day out for all the family! Farnham's Bird World has been entertaining young and old alike for decades now, and it's easy to see why. Boasting a huge array of wonderful wildlife in their enormous gardens, as well as a beautiful underwater world, you can really get in the kids good books this Saturday!

It's always worth checking out the events at Bird World, as there's always something that will provide you with a great family day out. There are so many wonderful species of birds and fish to enjoy every day though that showing up any day will put a smile on your face! Click here to contact Bird World with any questions you may have.

Sunday - Guildford Symphony Orchestra Presents Spring Classics at Charterhouse, Godalming
Located in the Great Hall of one of the country's oldest and most famous private schools, treat yourself to some relaxing classical music this Sunday 21st at Charterhouse. There, the Guildford Symphony Orchestra will serenade you with some of the finest works from the likes of Brahms, Mendelssohn and Beethoven.

So if celebrating the rise of Spring in the company of some of classical musics most famous pieces is for you, we recommend taking yourself off to Charterhouse from 7.30pm this Sunday. Click here to see the GSO programme for this year.
