Week Starting 19 April 2010

Drip Drip Drop, There's NO April Showers!

Ah you can keep your volcanic ash and your election coverage; we all have a smile on our face when we've had a weekend like that one! The majority of us will have minor sunburn, those weird marks on your arms from lying on the grass for too long, or even a crate of antihistamines... but doesn't it all feel good?

So with that in mind, keep smiling and see what The Good Time Guide can recommend this week. There's loads and loads of things to do, but we feel this is the best array. Work out, eat, dance and relax, not necessarily in that order, and keep your eyes peeled for places to use The Wonderful Good Time Guide Offer Card...

Monday - Surrey Sports Park Opening!
A brand spanking new, state of the art centre that will have facilities for pretty much any sport you can think of! Surrey Sports Park finally opens toady (Monday 19th April), and is going to be the new home ground for Guildford Heat, Guildford City Swimming Club and Surrey Storm.

Moreover, Surrey Sports Park will have top fitness and training facilities for us regular folk. Rest assured, all your requirements should be met!

If you're interested in joining what has ultimately got to be one of the best gyms in the country, click here to enquire now!

Tuesday - The Garden Restaurant , Farnham - Amazing Deal with The Good Time Guide...
Did you know that The Garden Restaurant in Farnham actually lives up to it's name by having a rather large outdoor area, complete with patio? It's true, and in these days of glorious sunshine everyone wants to sit outside, so don't be fooled by the unassuming entrance to this fantastic restaurant!

Moreover, while smugly nestling yourself in said garden, you can clutch your Offer Card and know that you are entitled to the £10 lunch menu - complete with glass of wine or soft drink - all day! So there's no need to rush to The Garden Restaurant at lunch - cruise down there any time you like (except on Sunday, but we're not talking about Sunday), eat well and sip on your glass of chardonnay or merlot for a crisp ten pound note! Call 01252 710222 to book!

Wednesday - Michael Marra at Farnham Maltings
Michael Marra is one of Scotland's most prolific singer/songwriters and he arrives at Farnham Maltings on Wednesday 21 April for what promises to be a fantastic concert. His songs are a mixture of amusing melancholy and humorous humility and are as personal and as universal as those of Randy Newman or Tom Waits, with a dash of Ivor Cutler thrown in.

To most he is a solo performer touring the length and breadth of Britain, performing in arts centres, theatres, folk clubs and village halls. He has opened for such diverse performers as Van Morrison, The Proclaimers, Louden Wainwright III, Barbara Dickson and Deacon Blue. Most recently, he collaborated with Graham McLaren of Theatre Babel on a new production of The Demon Barber for Perth Theatre.

Michael Marra is probably Scotland's best kept secret. Opportunities to see him this far south are few and far between and so don’t miss this fantastic talent at the Maltings this Wednesday 21st April! Tickets £15 adv, £17 on the door; call 01252 745444 to book.

Thursday - Little Shop of Horrors - Grayshott Stagers at Grayshott Village Hall
The Grayshott Stagers are a likeable bunch, boasting some cracking performances over the years. This week is, of course, no exception, with the stagers performing their take on the classic Little Shop of Horrors. For cave-dwellers, this is a black comedy musical about a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood. It may not sound funny, but it is, and it has a fantastic score of early '60s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, which is great music in anyones book!

From Wednesday 21st until Saturday the 24th April, the guys will be performing at Grayshott Village Hall and it'll be a hoot! Click here to book them there tickets!

Friday - Boileroom Presents: Unwanted featuring A-Skillz
Breaks Breaks Breaks! If you're into dance music, you'll realise what a massive coup this is for the ever-brilliant Boileroom, without question Guildford's premier live music venue. A-Skillz headlines tonight, and with his frenetic blend of hip-hop, drum n' bass, dubstep and breaks you'll enter the weekend with one enormous smile on your face!

Supporting Mr Skillz (as we're sure he loves to be known) this Friday 23rd is DJ Mr Cosmo with his fantastic funky blend of hip-hop, and The Roots Brothers who will be performing their take on roots, reggae and dub with gusto. In a nutshell, don't miss this night; it's going to be truly awesome. Click here to book tickets or call 01483 440022 right now!!

Saturday - Vero Cibo, Guildford
Now, you know when you go to a venue that sells itself as serving 'authentic' food and drink? We don't doubt it to be true - plus it'd be libelous if we claimed anything else - but authentic in the case of Vero Cibo is a word that these guys and girls take very, very seriously indeed. That means most of their Italian meats and cheeses come from the villages in the Daunian hills in Southern Italy, the ancestral homeland of the owners of this great cafe-bar!

Click here to see the line-up of fantastic menus you can expect from Vero Cibo; as you can see they cater for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in-between! Call 01483 572604 to find out anything else that may be playing on your mind.

Sunday - Visit Coverwood Lakes and Gardens
Described as "A beautiful jewel in the Surrey Hills", The Good Time Guide recommends you visit Coverwood Lakes and Gardens, as it's not too often such an opportunity arises! For this Sunday 25th, and the next several Sundays (May 2nd, 9th, 16th), the gardens will be open from 2pm until 6.

Located midway between the villages of Peaslake and Ewhurst, Coverwood comprises of 14 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, which incorporates four stunning lakes, you'll be reminded why the stresses of life can often be trivial. You'll need to go through the relevant channels to visit, as this is a residential place not usually open to us mere mortals! Click here to get the contact details, and be glad you called!

Tip of The Week

Celebrate St Georges Day Weekend with North Street Market

Time to celebrate all that's great and good about being English! This Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of April sees North Street Market putting on a very special show for all of you willing to attend!

What to expect? Well, Henry V himself will be delivering his famous 'St George' and 'Band of Brothers' speeches in the high street (NB: It's not actually Henry V, silly; he comes courtesy of the Guildford Shakespeare Company).

Said company will also be giving workshops in olde English for both adults and kids, and Friary Street will see Chelsea FC in the Community offering the chance to chat to some coaches and more!

That's all we can fit in this teeny tiny orange rectangle, but be sure to check here for any more info!
