What's Going On in Farnham?

Farnham Wine Festival 2012

Perhaps the only thing to rival 'beer festival' in the exciting event stakes, and this one takes place at Farnham's University of Creative Arts on Saturday March 10th 2012. 80 different wines are on offer - that should surely be enough to convince you.

This is not going to be a formal, pretentious event, but rather a fun evening for experts and non-experts alike. Want a further nudge? There'll be speciality cheeses and meats plus bread accompanied by live music. Awesome.

Unravel - Festival of Knitting at Farnham Maltings

How many times do we have to inform you of the greatness of the Farnham Maltings? Where else could you find an event such as this:

"The Maltings will once again be transformed into a woollen wonderland with a thriving marketplace of exhibitors from the local area and across the country.

As with previous years, visitors will be able to hear a range of talks, see demonstrations, take part in workshops, purchase yarn, buttons and other accessories, join in the sock circle, watch the unravel fashion show and even enter their favourite item into the ‘Best in Show’ competition. Unravel has this year commissioned three yarn installations which will be on display both inside and outside of the building.

A “Stuffing Station”, part of the Cultural Olympiad’s Woolsack Project, will be at unravel 2012. Knitters around the country have been knitting cushions from British wool to give to the athletes attending the 2012 games. Those who have knitted cushions are invited to bring them along to our Stuffing Station!"

'Unravel' takes place on Saturday and Sunday 25th and 26th February - you know the drill, keen knitters - click here.

'Todo Sobre Mi Padre' & 'Consciousness' at Farnham's Craft Study Centre

The Craft Study Centre is part of Farnham's University for the Creative Arts, and showcases some rather exceptional exhibitions throughout the year. 'Todo Sobre Mi Padre' ('All about my Father') and 'Consciousness' by Nicholas Arroyave-Portela are two major ceramic works - and as ceramic art isn't our forte, here's some better informed blurb:

"Nicholas Arroyave-Portela presents two major ceramic works in this exhibition. Todo Sobre Mi Padre ('All about my Father') is a rhythmic and contemplative series of wall panels, a 'personal journey looking at all aspects of my identity'.

Consciousness is a new work produced specially for the exhibition and will be installed in mid February. The work refers to the Mayan Long Count Calendar which is said to end around 21 December 2012. The installation concerns the idea of a cycle of time through a personal perspective and it also suggests the notion of a universal cycle in which world events are played out."

The two exhibitions run from 17 January to 24 March 2012. To find out more about tickets, navigate your way here.

Farnham Astrological Society

Star-gazers, here's something for you - a collection of talks from the Farnham Astrological Society. A group of keen astrologists and cosmologists, anyone can join - find out about that here.

Every Month the Society has a topic and special speaker on the second Tuesday of every month in Fleet - click here to check out the programme for 2012.

Rural Life Centre

What better way to celebrate the outdoors than to actually head to a place named the Rural Life Centre? Located in Tilford, the RLC (as we and probably no-one else calls it) has many an event going on throughout the year. Here's some info:

"The Rural Life Centre is a country life museum, assembled by the late Mr & Mrs Henry Jackson and now run by a charitable trust. It is pleasantly distributed over ten acres of field, woodland and barns, and comprises a large number of implements and devices marking over 150 years of farming."

Farnham Information

Farnham is an amazing little town. Don’t just take our word for it, get up and go see it for yourselves. It really does have a little bit of everything on offer: some truly fantastic antique shops, breweries, local markets, potteries, and the Farnham Maltings (the local arts centre with an overwhelming programme of events from blues, to comedy, to cinema, plus so much more).

Did we mention The Library Gardens? Oh you lucky people are in for a treat. Peek behind the local library and discover the stunning walled garden, which happily boasts a free tennis court for you sport lovers out there. As if this was not enough we ask you who could resist the pretty parrots at Birdworld?

We could go on for hours, but suffice it say we think you will like this town a whole bunch.
