Safe in the hands of new owners - and supporting a superb and traditional facelift - this popular old roadside inn oozes bonhomie. And, though the food is the driving force, the small bar heaves with upmarket locals in for a pint of Adnams Broadside or a glass of pinot noir. Smart and cosy it is, with black wood ceiling beams, striking wall timbers and warming winter fires; service is both friendly and upbeat.

Chef Remi Ravaux's lengthy repetoire should please all with classic and modern dishes, and seafood a speciality. Blackboard specials like pan-fried fillet of rainbow trout with curly kale and roasted garlic sauce complement a main menu that covers all, from roasted shellfish platter to Cumberland sausage with creamed mash and gravy. The sophisticated grill night takes place on Wedneday evenings which are not to be missed.

A front terrace, a big garden and a private dining room upstairs complete the happy picture.
