What's Going On in Guildford?

Upcoming Events at Bar des Arts

There are plenty of events going on Bar Des Arts at the moment and we most definitely recommend a visit.

Showcasing their musical talents on the 18th of May will be Jonny Winston from the East midlands and following up on the 19th will be Steve Brookes.

Also coming up on the 7th of June will be a Funky Motown evening as well as an evening of Flamenco on the 14th of June. But these are to name but a very few so follow this link to find out more about what's going on with guys at Bar Des Arts.

Kane FM's Beats For Hearts

The guys at Kane FM have put together a cycle team to take part in the London to Brighton Cycle Race on the 17th of June.

The team are planning to raise £2000 pounds for The British Heart Foundation by cycling the 54 miles.

They are drumming up support by holding an event at Backline Live. "Beats For Hearts" takes place on June the 8th and will feature the talents of Kane FM's artists as well as special guest Survival. Tickets are £5 on the door and ALL the proceeds will be given to The British Heart Foundation.

Clandon Park Film Exhibition.

Running from the 3rd until the 14th of June, Clandon Park is hosting an exhibition by Video Artist Ruth Hinkel-Pevzner. "The Gardens" is a new work by the artist centering around a series of three evocative short films focusing on three woman from different generations.

Set in the beautiful surrounds of Clandon Park's gardens, it is the artist's intention that the visitor draws inspiration from the stunning surroundings whilst watching the piece in order to create a whole experience.

This is to be a fantastic exhibition and one not to be missed.

Gallery On The Street.

In 2011 Maria-Nike Markantonatos came to Puttenham with the idea of bringing art and the beautiful village together. And so the gallery was born, offering visitors a great chance to view contempory art in a wonderfully lit space. Beyond that there's also a great opportunity to explore the local area around the village, which is beautiful.

Really though, when you have a gallery showcasing work by artist such as Victor and Glenys Ambrus,Charles Bone and Faith Winter (to name but a very few) why not take the day absorbing what's on offer at The Gallery on The Street.

KOKO Hair Celebrate their First Birthday - Why Not Join Them?

You may not be familiar with KOKO Hair (you should be, mind) but if you are, you'll surely be as amazed as TGTG that they have been in existence for a year. But a year it has been, so why not celebrate with them, in time for a certain jubilee weekend?

Expect a jolly good old community knees up with bunting, sarnies, cakes and fizz - you can even dress up if you like. Food and drink is supplied, but they'll warmly welcome any dishes you'd like to contribute.

The event takes place on Thursday 31st May from 6pm - come here should we have missed anything...

Surrey Rollergirls - Ladies, Try Your Hand at Some Roller Derby...

A sport that is taking the nations capital by storm, and has within the past six months seen its presence in Surrey keenly felt. We'll explain more shortly, but first, a bit of info about roller derby lifted from a certain online encyclopaedia:

"Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups ("jams") in which both teams designate a scoring player (the "jammer") who scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The teams attempt to assist their own jammer while hindering the opposing jammer — in effect, playing both offense and defense simultaneously."

Sounds brutal... and awesome. And now, the Guildford-based Surrey Rollergirls are on the scene. If you're a lady over 18 and you want to partake in a fast-growing competitive sport, you really should follow that link...

Lace & Tweed - Surrey’s Biggest Vintage Fashion Fair...

Isn't it strange that as time goes on, we become more interested in the past? Food for thought certainly, but as this unusually philosophical intro comes to a close, we should inform those of you that do indeed love all and sundry of the olden days that the perfect event is on the horizon; Lace and Tweed sets its delightful self up onto Guildford High Street on Saturday 9th June.

Thirty five stalls of mens and ladies vintage fashion. Live music all day. Vintage tea room. Pop-up beauty salon - and more. It's enough to make you cry with joy into your faux-fur collar, holding a vinyl while supping on a chintzy cup of tea. Or something. In short - it's going to be a fantastic day.

G.F. Watts: The Hall of Fame - Portraits of his Famous Contemporaries

TGTG-ers of Guildford, you will almost certainly be aware of The Watts Gallery, one of the most famous in the area. Now, the venue is hosting some of its namesakes finest works:

"An opportunity to see many of Watts's finest portraits including those of Tennyson, Millais, Morris, Leighton and Manning. The portraits are being loaned by the National Portrait Gallery, Leighton House Museum and a private collection and as such this represents a unique opportunity to see Watts's finest portraits gathered together.

Between 1847 and 1901 G.F. Watts created a magnificent portrait gallery of his great contemporaries for presentation to the nation. By the end of his life he was to give more than forty portraits to the National Portrait Gallery in London, a unique record of the people he most admired, of whom many were his friends."

Surrey County Show

Ah the Surrey County Show - undoubtedly a big event on the Guildford calendar. For 2012, they've gone even bigger, as the event coincides with a certain member of the royal family's Diamond Jubilee - and the event takes place on that very day, Monday 4th June.

This being the largest one-day agricultural show in the whole country, you'll forgive us (and spare your eyes) if we don't list every thing that's occurring between 8am and 6pm, but rest assured a great array of animals and animal-based events are taking place here.

Guildford Information

Guildford has so much to offer beyond the ordinary. How about taking a hot air balloon ride if you are a fan of dizzying heights, or there’s Guildford’s ghost tour for enthusiasts of the macabre? Consider yourself a bit of a dancer? Why not spend an evening at one of the numerous venues offering live music. If you prefer to stay in your seat while being musically titillated you should attend one of the philharmonic orchestra’s concerts.

We would happily eat out every night of the week at the fabulous array of restaurants and welcoming public houses if only our wallets would let us (sob sob). To top this off these places look pretty damn fine thanks to the wealth of beautiful historic buildings and lush open spaces. That just leaves us to say that morn or night, whatever takes your fancy, chances are you will be able to do it here.
